General questions
Most of the dental treatments start with a consultation. This is the first time when the patient (you) meet the chosen dentist - thus, it’s important what your impressions are.
At our clinic, consultation is more than just a simple health check!
During consultation, we’d like to know more about you so that you get the most suitable treatment to your needs. We want you to know that we always take the time to care about you and your problems, we don’t treat our patients on the ‘production line’.
We ask each patient to bring the completed anamnesis sheet (case history) with them since we can only treat you responsibly if we know everything about your health status. There are treatments that cannot be performed during certain diseases so it’s of crucial importance that you carefully fill in the case history form.
Besides thorough medical examination, an x-ray photograph of the patient’s teeth is also made. We make the diagnosis on the basis of these and work on possible treatment alternatives together.
The treatment plan is made in close cooperation with your dentist so that you know what awaits you during treatments. This is necessary because that way, even the cost is predictable since only those interventions will be performed which you prearranged with your dentist. The treatment plan is actually a timetable that includes the number of necessary visits and the description of each intervention.
Besides professionalism, the treatment plan is a guarantee for you to receive every necessary treatment without any needless interventions.
The majority of specialists recommend that patients visit their dentist every six months or at least on an annual basis. Unfortunately only a few do so since there’s always an excuse: ‘there’s no time for it’ and fear is a powerful argument as well.
Thanks partly to that, Hungary holds many negative records in the field of dental diseases. For example, we are first in oral cancer deaths but various gum diseases are also common amongst the population.
With regular health checks, we can recognize any kind of changes in time - thus, they are pretty well curable. This is the reason why we can’t emphasize the importance of controls enough.
When did you last go to the dentist? Was it more than a year ago? If so, the avoid any further delays and make an appointment now!
When someone hears the word ‘dentist’ , his/her face is immediately drawn as if with pain. Maybe it’s because of bad habits or pavlovian response, but nobody likes to go to the dentist.
Nobody can be persuaded that dental procedures are painless since it’s possible that everybody bases his/her opinion on a bad experience. It would be an exaggeration to say that a dental treatment is completely painless, since different individual sensitivities may always occur. However, thanks to modern dental instruments and materials the level of pain can be minimized.
We try our best to make our patients leave our clinic with positive experiences and visit us again next time without anxiety.
It would be difficult to tell which toothpaste is the best for anyone. The truth is that the majority of toothpastes available on the market serve their purpose - that is to say they’re no better or worse than others. Thus, if you like its taste and it doesn’t contain anything that you have an allergy to, you can purchase it safely.
If someone has sensitive teeth, it’s worth choosing a toothpaste that is designed for this problem. However, as there’s a huge supply, it’s worth asking the opinion of your dentist so you can confidently buy a toothpaste which improves your condition instead of worsening it.
It’s also important not to use such toothpastes if the given problem no longer exists since it would cause more harm than good.
So, there’s no universal recipe. If you’re fond of ‘green’ solutions, then you can find many of the so-called ‘natural’ toothpastes. For those who want to prevent tooth decay, fluoride pastes are the best solution.
Don’t forget that the duration and the technique of toothbrushing is much more important than the type of the given toothpaste!
In dentistry, one of the cornerstones of modern diagnostics is the x-ray photograph which gives an accurate picture regarding the condition of the patient’s teeth and bone structure. We use the equipments of one of the most reliable manufacturers, the German SIRONA to make panoramic radiograms and intraoral recordings.
These modern machines don’t emit as much radiation as the old, outdated ones so there’s nothing to worry about! Even if we need to make another radiograph for any particular reason, the radiation level is so low that it won’t be harmful for your health.
Dentures
In case of complete toothlessness, the patient has two options. On of them is the traditional removable denture that is simply called prosthesis in the vernacular term. The other choice is the implant supported removable denture but this is only possible if your bone structure is dense and strong enough to get a dental implant.
Removable dentures are quick and long-lasting solutions while having various advantages. First, they are ready relatively soon especially if we compare them to implant supported removable dentures. In the latter case, several months of healing time is required.
Removable dentures are made with an aesthetic design, so you can wear them without shame. Their only disadvantage is that they are not stable enough but this can be remedied by denture fixatives.
The appropriate stability is achievable with fixed dentures but as we mentioned, this option is not available for everyone. Preliminary examinations need to be done at our clinic to find our whether you are eligible for having an implant.
Patients often feel their new dentures uncomfortable upon receiving. This is a natural phenomenon since it’s more difficult to get used to the prosthesis for someone who lived without teeth for a very long time.
Getting used to the denture is a process that may have some discomfort but after a while the patient can’t even tell anymore if there’s something in his/her mouth. Thus, you shouldn’t be afraid of the initial discomfort but it’s worth consulting your dentist who may give you many useful advices regarding this issue.
Nevertheless, it mustn’t be taken lightly if it’s painful to wear your prosthesis, hurts your gums or if it produces any other similar symptoms. If this happens, you must contact your dentist because it’s highly possible that it will be necessary to modify the prosthesis.
The time that it takes for the denture to be ready highly depends on the type of the prosthesis.
Traditional removable dentures are made the fastest - usually, they are ready from 7 to 10 days within sampling.
When it comes to implant-supported removable dentures or combined dentures, the waiting period is longer, since these prostheses require a more complicated process during which numerous aspects are taken into account, such as the method of attachment.
We can only specify of the exact time of completion after the examinations.
The preparation time of implant-supported dentures includes the recovery time after the surgery as well - thus, this procedure may take months. Besides, there exists mini implants as well that are perfect for fixing the removable dentures, they’re cheap and less demanding which would be a big relief to elderly people.
In case of complete toothlessness, we usually suggest our patients to have 4 pieces of mini implants in the lower, and 6 pieces of mini implants in the upper jawbone.
Naturally, you can differ from these numbers if the state of your bone structure requires it.
Implantation
How do I know if I can get a dental implant? What kind of examinations are necessary to find it out?
Dental implants may be compatible with fixed or removable dentures which provides numerous opportunities for the patients.
One of the most important conditions of implantation is having sufficient amount of strong and dense bone tissues. Where no such construction exists, bone graft may be necessary for receiving an implant.
Before the implantation surgery takes place, we absolutely need a 3D CT recording which shows the detailed condition of the bone structure. This wouldn’t be visible on a 2D panoramic x-ray, so only 3D CT can give us reliable results.
A 3D recording is also important because the specialist uses it to determine the exact implant size that the patient may receive. Only 3D CT ensures such an accurate recording.
Although little is said about it, but there exists some diseases which may exclude the implantation procedure. This is the reason why it’s so important to indicate every existing problems in the case history - otherwise there’s a high chance that the implant will be rejected.
If your bone structure is incompatible with ‘traditional’ implants, and bone graft is not a solution either, we suggest having mini implants in certain cases, for example when it comes to implant supported removable dentures.
Implants are made of a tissue-friendly material, the titanium. The surface of the implant is covered with titanium-oxide which doesn’t dissolve in saliva - thus, it doesn’t have any interactions with the human body, so it’s sure that it won’t trigger any allergic reaction.
When it comes to metal allergy, it’s necessary to pay particular attention to the composition of the superstructure (bridges, crowns). It’s obvious that we have to exclude metal ceramic prostheses, we suggest having the more aesthetic zirconium ceramic crowns and bridges.
Always inform your dentist regarding any metal allergy you may have since once the prosthesis is glued permanently on the implant, it’s really hard to correct it later on. Furthermore, it’s worth making an allergy test before you choose the material of the prosthesis so that you can make the right choice.
When it comes to dental implantation, we can’t pass the question of pain without saying a word. It’s important to say that we’re all different - some people handle pain better, others - with a slight exaggeration - can be even ‘killed’ by a mosquito bite.
Since the intervention is done under local anaesthesia, patients practically don’t feel any pain during surgery. Naturally, as soon as the anesthetic effect starts to fade away, sensitivity may occur and the gums may become swollen and painful but all these symptoms can be treated well with painkillers.
If you have intense pain which doesn’t slip away in a few days and your gums are visibly inflamed, you should visit your dentist at any cost in order to begin treating the problem as soon as possible.
Don’t be scared - complications are pretty rare with implants however it’s always valuable to know the possible consequences.
Although there are implants which are immediately chargeable, they usually get temporary prosthesis first. The complete healing time may vary, but it’s a minimum of 3 months and in certain cases, it may take half a year to fully recover.
The permanent prosthesis can only be installed after the bone tissue has overgrown the implant as if it was an original tooth root. This is the point where the ossification providing full stability takes place. Only then will the implant be chargeable - thus, the installation of permanent prosthesis is only possible after ossification.
3D CT exactly shows whether the patient’s bone is suitable for immediate implantation or if we need to perform bone grafting first. Bone graft is necessary if the given jawbone is not high or not wide enough or if its structure is inadequate to support the implant.
The aim of bone grafting - as its name shows - is to replace the missing amount of bone tissue that has wasted away as a result of the missing tooth. Various materials might be used during this treatment, such as bone tissues taken from other parts of the body or artificial bone materials.
There’s a special kind of bone grafting, the so-called ‘sinus lift’ otherwise known as the elevation of the sinus. This procedure is employed around the upper jawbone when there’s not enough space for the implant because the sinus is extending downwards. In such cases, we insert bone graft material below the mucous membrane of the elevated sinus. That way, we create enough space for the implant.
Tooth filling
A lot of people worry about their old amalgam fillings and the information regarding them on the internet are not always relevant and obvious.
A couple of years ago, a heated discussion took place on amalgam fillings - should you replace them with modern composite fillings? Can we still use this material in dentistry? Today, tempers have already calmed and we have the universal acceptance that those who still have amalgam fillings don’t need to worry since mercury dissolves in such a small quantity that it’s completely harmless.
The situation is different if somebody is allergic to mercury but it’s something that you don’t meet very often.
The majority of people want to get rid of these metallic, remarkably visible fillings because of aesthetic reasons since if you laugh heartily, the amalgam is clearly visible even in your back teeth.
So if you’re bothered by your amalgam fillings and you want to get aesthetic dental fillings that perfectly fits together with the color of your original teeth then make them replaced. Otherwise, you can live with them without any problem.
The lifespan of composite fillings is usually between 7 and 10 years. This period may vary depending on what kind of materials did the dentist use during the production of the filling and how thorough the specialist was when he/she inserted the filling.
Appropriate oral care also influences the filling’s lifetime - namely if we don’t neglect caring about our teeth and we clean them properly, aesthetic fillings will last much much longer.
From time to time, it’s also important to check your fillings if they have secondary decay which can be seen below or along them. If the edge of the filling doesn’t have a precise closure, bacteria may get through and make your tooth decayed again.
Besides dental fillings, inlays and onlays mean other alternatives of tooth decay treatments.
Inlays and onlays are recommended when the missing part of the tooth is so big that a simple aesthetic filling wouldn’t be enough to solve the problem. They are made by the dental technician and they are glued in the hole that the dentist drilled previously.
When it comes to more extensive cavities, inlays and onlays are better because they can be fixed more securely and there’s a smaller chance of having secondary decays thanks to their better closure.
Orthodontics
Until your child has nothing but primary teeth, there’s no need to deal with orthodontics. However, their milk teeth should be cleaned appropriately (it’s very often that this procedure still requires parental help) since these teeth play a vital role in regulating the erupting permanent teeth. If milk teeth fall out too early, the permanent ones will grow uneven and orthodontics will be necessary.
The exact time to start orthodontic treatments depends on many factors. You may ask for a consultation as early as around age 6-7 but the actual start of the treatment is suggested not sooner than ages 8-10.
There’s no age restriction in orthodontics - in addition, more and more young adults decide to make their irregular teeth more perfect with these treatments. You can’t expect the same spectacular results of a childhood treatment but it may be useful before the production of prostheses.
Since there are several kinds of orthodontics - rather orthodontic instruments - everyone can find the most suitable method that satisfies his/her needs. Consultation is a great opportunity to share your demands with us so that we can find a solution which is the most ideal for your lifestyle and for the achievement of your dreams.
In each case, allergic complaints are recorded at the first consultation - thus, the orthodontist takes your metal allergy into account when he/she recommends an orthodontic appliance. Our patients may choose from various, completely metal free appliances at our clinic so even metal allergic people can calmly get into the treatment.
During the first consultation, the orthodontist assesses the problems to be remedied with the help of a thorough oral examination. Having heard the patient’s points of view, the treatment plan and the usable appliances are discussed. In order to make a customized treatment plan, the specialist needs to have an imprint of both the lower and upper dentures besides a panoramic and a tele x-ray.
The mounting of fixed braces is completely painless. During installation, we clean the surface of the teeth first, then we put the brackets in the accurate position and mount them using a small amount of adhesive. The cementation is stabilized with the help of the illumination of a special lamp. Finally, the archwire is applied which holds the brackets together.
You may have an unusual feeling after the orthodontic appliance is installed but wearing it will become completely natural after a couple of days. Tooth sensitivity besides gum, lip and tongue irritation may occur which can be reduced with more fluid intake. These initial, unpleasant symptoms might be soothed with the help of an especially developed dental wax.
Tooth whitening
You can only smile with relief if you have perfect teeth. Not only irregular or hollow teeth may cause frustration but discolored, yellowish or grayish teeth as well. Luckily, thanks to modern medical whitening procedures, you can have your desired snow-white teeth in no time.
We can find many home tricks in connection with tooth whitening. One of the most frequent advices is to use baking soda. Encouraged by this method, many people find medical treatments an unnecessary waste of money.
The question to whether medical whitening is better than various homemade tricks, the answer is a clear YES! Only this procedure provides long-lasting and spectacular result as far as the color is concerned. This is the reason why it’s worth choosing the safe way instead of experimenting at home.
Baking soda is a universal miracle cure which is both good for scale removal and tooth whitening. Basing on this, we can wonder if it’s worth experimenting with it or it’s better to choose a safer method.
Our suggestion regarding baking soda is a clear NO - we’ll explain why.
The surface of your teeth is seriously damaged by the friction that is present during this method of tooth whitening. The tiny granules inside baking soda make the tooth enamel rough - thus, contaminants are adhered more easily so the next whitening treatment is due sooner.
In the past, there were much more drastic methods than baking soda, such as various acids or rubbing your teeth with salt. Thankfully, it’s already in the past.
We can find many different whitening toothpastes by walking in front of the shelves of pharmacies. It’s indeed difficult to choose, since all commercials promise that you have the smile of the superstars after two weeks of usage.
However, the thing is that the effect of whitening toothpastes are doubtful so it’s better not to expect miracles. Daily contaminant are neatly removed but they don’t make your teeth whiter. Additionally, you have to be careful with the particles inside since they might damage your enamel.
A lot of people omit going on whitening treatments since they think that they can’t drink coffee or tea or any other coloured drinks anymore.
If this myth was the reason that held you back, we have good news. You can consume these drinks after the whitening treatment, although there are some rules to follow.
In order to make the result of the whitening treatment long-lasting, you must avoid smoking and drinking coloured beverages. It’s also important to emphasize the first 48 hours which is particularly critical from this point of view, but you don’t need to permanently give up drinking your coffee in the morning.
The issue of pain emerges in almost all dental treatments, including tooth whitening.
During medical whitening, the dentist uses a so-called whitening gel which breaks down under the influence of light. The ‘job’ is done by the oxygen liberated on the surface of the teeth. Thus, the intervention is completely painless but it’s important to emphasize that individual sensitivities may always occur.
It’s better for those patients whose teeth are already sensitive to prepare in advance with special gels. Sensitivities to hot and cold might evolve after the whitening treatment, but they can be handled well.
Root canal treatment
The aim of root canal treatment is to save the inflamed teeth and avoid tooth extraction.
This intervention is necessary when the pulp and the tooth roots are inflamed. In such cases, the tooth can’t be treated with a simple dental filling. In order to use the given tooth as long as possible, inflamed parts must be removed and root canals must be closed.
As the initiation of the treatment, we make a radiograph of the diseased tooth since this is the only way to thoroughly examine the condition of the chewing organ and its surroundings. The intervention starts after anaesthesia by cleaning the pulp chamber with which we open a path towards root canals.
In the following step of root canal treatment, we clean, disinfect and shape the tooth roots and finally, root fillings are put in place.
Owing to anaesthesia, the intervention is almost completely painless. Mechanical processing significantly reduces the treatment time - you don’t need to go back to the dentist for months since only two occasions might be enough for a successful treatment.
Root canal treatment
A long time ago, when there hasn’t been any modern dental equipment, root canal treatment was considered to be a painful and circuitous intervention. In addition, so many things could go wrong since this procedure requires a great deal of precision from the specialists.
Today, the determination of root length and the preparation of root canals are carried out mechanically. On one hand, this speeds up the process of the treatment and on the other hand, these modern devices carry out their duties with the utmost accuracy.
What difference does that make? This way, we significantly lower the risk of ‘overfilling’ meaning that the filling material is longer than the tooth root. Or the contrary, when the filling material doesn’t fill out the sculpted root canal and the nutritive ground for inflammation is ready.
Parodontology
Parodontology provides solution for treating and preventing periodontal diseases. In the beginning, the disease is limited to the gums but should they not be treated in time, the illness may affect the whole support system of the teeth, including the bone structure.
In each case, it is extremely important that a periodontist care about the problem as soon as possible since the delayed treatment of a periodontal disease is an irreversible process.
Treating periodontal disease
During the first consultation / health check, the periodontist measures from various angles the depth of the pockets which are evolved around the teeth. Both the level of gum recession and the movability of the tooth are inspected as well. The customized treatment plan is done on the basis of these.
During plaque removal, the dentist cleans the patient’s teeth and gums then performs gingival curettage if necessary. In addition, the doctor treats the inflamed areas with a special anti-inflammatory gel. Our dentists and skilled dental hygienists help in the prevention of our patients’ dental problems with detailed brushing guidance.
If gingivitis is treated in time, the symptoms usually pass away within ten days. In order to do so, it’s really important for the patients to participate in post-treatment health checks regularly so that their gums remain inflammation-free for a long time.
Gum that’s recessed because of periodontal disease can be corrected during a minor surgical procedure. This way, both the sensitivity of the teeth and aesthetic problems involving gum recession may be terminated.
Other dental problems
Bad breath affect many people but only a few visit the dentist with this problem. In certain cases, bad breath is caused by the food that you’ve eaten. However, in other cases it may indicate more serious, even internal problems.
There are dental reasons for this symptom, such as periodontal disease or bacteria proliferating in the periodontal pocket (the pocket between the tooth and the gum). Besides, inadequate oral hygiene may be the other reason for having bad breath that is neglected by a part of the adult population.
In any event, it’s worth visiting a specialist (if you don’t suspect anything else, a dentist) and find out what could be the reason of this unpleasant symptom.
Tartar is none other than calcified food leftovers and other contaminations that are deposited on the tooth surface. If there’s too much of them on your teeth, yellowish discoloration occurs which is clearly visible to the naked eye.
On one hand, tartar is an aesthetic problem since yellow teeth don’t provide a beautiful sight. However, it’s more important that tartar may lead to other diseases, such as gingivitis.
My gums are red and swollen, besides they are bleeding when I brush my teeth. Is it only the dentist who could help?
Gingivitis is almost endemic in our country. Unfortunately, this disease is not treated with sufficient awareness and the majority of people trivialize its signs.
It’s important to know that gingivitis might have serious consequences - in the worst case, it may cause teeth loss. Thus, if you experience gum bleeding while you brush your teeth, visit your dentist as soon as possible since gingivitis might be well cured.
The most frequent reasons for gingivitis are accumulated plaque and proliferating bacteria inside. However, a bad prosthesis may cause such symptoms as well. The specialist always starts with the identification of the cause and he uses this knowledge to start the necessary treatment.
