Preimplantation practical advices

Preimplantation practical advices

  • Don’t arrive with an empty stomach and eat as you usually do before surgery (although it is worth avoiding heavy, fatty foods and paying attention not to put any unnecessary ‘pressure' on your body)

  • Bring somebody with you if you can since driving a car is not recommended after the surgery because of the blunting effect of the local anaesthesia.

  • In case you regularly take medications, take them at the usual time - except for the anticoagulant medicines which should be reduced according to the physician’s advice.

Useful tips for the period following the implantation

  • First of all, it’s really important to mention that the patient should not eat until the anaesthetic effect lasts. Otherwise, the patient might bit his/her lips, tongue or mucous membrane since they are completely numb or barely sensible.
  • When the surgery is done, it’s suggested to take a painkiller before the effect of the anaesthesia wears off. Thus, you don’t have to deal with the pain.
  • If pain occurs following the implantation, it’s worth taking painkillers later on. Typically, it can be omitted from the day after surgery.
  • Driving should be avoided since the local anaesthetic slows the reflexes.
  • Sometimes you might have a swollen face - in such cases, we recommend using freezer gel. As far as the procedure is concerned, it’s suggested to let 10 minutes of rest time after 10 minutes of ‘freezing’.
  • In order to avoid infection, antibiotic protection is really important - thus, you should continuously take the prescribed antibiotics for 5 days. If there are complications, please check with your doctor!
  • The medicines recommended by the specialist should be taken accurately!
  • Consuming dairy products and spicy food is contraindicated.
  • During the day of surgery avoid using a straw, don’t spit and don’t rinse vigorously.
  • Don’t drink coffee, tea or alcohol and don’t smoke for 3 days after the surgery. Nicotine patch could be a helpful solution for smokers.
  • Since postoperative bleeding may occur, avoid physical strain for a few days after the surgery (including exercise). The same applies to the usage of the solarium or the sauna because staying in too hot or too cold environments should be avoided after a few days of the implantation.
  • Don’t chew in the place of the tooth implant and avoid consuming hard foods.
  • Speak as little as possible since the movement of the jaw should be minimized. Speech is physically demanding for the oral cavity.
  • Your sutures must remain in their place for 5-7 days - don’t poke them neither with your hand, nor with your tongue. Always come to the stitch removal appointments since we can only control the healing process through these.

What should you bear in mind after the bone grafting procedure?

  • Swelling occurs in the affected area which can be alleviated using an ice pack.
  • Nose or oral bleeding may occur
  • Nose blowing is prohibited and it’s really important to avoid sneezing as well since they might result in the displacement of the bone graft material or in the loosening of the stitches.
  • Between the 7th and the 10th day after sinus lift, it is necessary to visit us for stitch removal. It’s the same occasion when the doctor checks the healing progress (the same applies to absorbable sutures).
  • Your doctor might want you to participate in further check-ups so that the healing process takes place under continuous control.
  • Physical exertion (strenuous physical work, including carrying, bowing, active sports and exercise) must be avoided at least for 4 days. Failure to comply could led to postoperative bleeding.
  • Due to the fact that it increases blood pressure, sauna should be avoided.

The remaining instructions are practically the same as the ones described above in the implantation / oral surgery section.
